Joy is a Choice! Choose Joy!

Last week I spoke about the need for joy to succeed in achieving your wellness and fitness goals. This week I want to share with you what I know to be true regarding the HOW in achieving joy.

I once heard a wise soul say, "You are always at choice." That is what I want you to understand about joy. Most people think that joy is an end result. I say that joy is a state of being. It is a way of living and perceiving the world. And the way we move into joy is to simply CHOOSE to do so.

My stance on achieving health through joy is to a) choose fitness activities and ways of eating that you enjoy AND that contribute to health and wellness or b) be so joyful with the end result that you don't mind doing what you have to do in order to get there.

With respect to exercise I usually need to enjoy what I do. For a long time I was a step aerobics fan, then I moved to Tae Bo. At one point I would practice African dance for hours on end and I have been part of the current Zumba craze. And now it is water aerobics, yoga and Wii Fit that I love. Yeah, I said Wii Fit. I cannot get enough of exercising with my Wii Balance Board.

What I have found is that when I find activities that truly land me in a joyful place, I crave engaging in that activity. I am more apt to actually workout and most times it doesn't even feel like working out.

I am usually in the "I do this for the sake of a beautiful body" category with respect to eating. I simply train myself to eat the foods that I know will lead me to a smaller and healthier body instead of the foods that only taste good and make me feel good emotionally.

But when I stand on the scale and see weightloss or look in the mirror and see toner muscles, I don't mind eating in a more restrictive manner I feel complete and utter joy at being healthy and feeling good about how I look.

My suggestion to you is to figure out how you will choose joy in creating a healthier you. Try out new ways of exercising. I never thought that I would love water aerobics or Wii Fit but I tried them with great results.

Decide that the end results, which are your goals, are so important to you that you are willing to do whatever it takes even if you don't all the time like the health promoting activity. The joy is in progressing toward your goals and achievingthem.
